iPod speed

From the unintentional humor department, last week the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission posted warnings in its "What's Hot" feature section about winter home heating hazards and—you guessed it—notebook PC battery use. Depending on which notebook you're using, you might be able to cover both warnings with one product.

Speaking of which, The Miami Herald reported last week that a Florida resident is suing Alienware, alleging that the notebook it sold him runs so hot the system often will just shut down. Alienware is owned by Dell, which has had its own overheating issues. Is there such a thing as "Dell cooties?"

Records filed with the SEC last week indicated Google boss Eric Schmidt sold a few million dollars worth of GOOG shares on the open market. For him, that might amount to pocket change. Or be roughly equal to what Google might expect to pay for a week's worth of legal work once its newly acquired YouTube starts fighting all those copyright infringement suits we keep hearing about.

Hewlett-Packard CEO Mark Hurd sent in responses to written questions on Pretextgate from the House Energy and Commerce Committee, in which he stated he believed individuals' private phone records were public information. (You're laughing again? Why?) At least he was afforded the benefit of answering that question in text, via letter. Former Chairman Patricia Dunn was asked the same thing, but under the lights at the committee's hearing last month.

When the folks at Ncell Systems, a Sun solution povider in Minnetonka, Minn., go hunting for customers in North Dakota, they literally go hunting.

Kip Lindberg, vice president of enterprise sales, said he and his colleagues load their guns and dogs into a Jayco Talon ZX Toy Hauler, go find potential customers, take them to a remote location and start shooting. Pheasants, that is.

And what hunting trip would be complete without an EqualLogic iSCSI PS100E array, a few Dell systems, and a Sun X2100 Opteron-based server? The trailer is part of Ncell's unique traveling road show, aimed at demonstrating virtualization technology. Lindberg said pheasant hunting is a great way to bond with customers.
