The Daily App: SugarSync

The daily app, SugarSync

Cloud-based storage companies for years have been promising access to all of your data from anywhere and with any device, but delivery has often been a matter of degrees. Claiming to be closest to 100 percent is SugarSync Inc., and its namesake solution is today's daily app.

The SugarSync solution includes free apps for Android, Blackberry, iPhone/iPad, Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms and a management component for Mac OS X and Windows. Once the latter is installed, the user is prompted to give the system a name and to select files to be SugarSync'd (copied) to a secure cloud account.

The free service includes 5GB of storage; paid accounts start at $4.99 per month for 30GB and max out at $24.99 for 250GB. We tested the SugarSync Manager for Mac OS X, which puts a hummingbird icon on the menu bar with controls for adding and removing files and folders, and an indicator for sync and storage capacity status. Shared folders appear with a green check mark.

Setup doesn't get much easier, and we were up and running with a free account in about five minutes and had synchronized our Galaxy Tab 2 after just a few minutes more. The tool facilities the simple selection of some or all files and/or folders to easily sync with all or some devices. In our tests, changes made to files were replicated instantly to the cloud and then propagated within seconds to the Galaxy Tab. A "Magic Briefcase" also appears on the desktop (or on the Documents folder on Windows) and automatically syncs any files placed there with all of your devices.
