NovaStor Saves The Data

egulatory compliance issues are no longer just for enterprises.

That’s the message Simi Valley, Calif.-based NovaStor, a developer of automated online backup technology, is hoping to drive home to ISVs and solution providers.

NovaStor is looking for partners to either host or resell online backup services aimed at small businesses that typically do not follow strict data-protection regimens, especially those that need to meet data-retention regulations even though such technology may be too expensive, said COO Shaun Walsh.

Such a service can be set up using NovaStor’s OnLine Backup software and offered to customers for between $9 and $20 per stored Gbyte of data, Walsh said.

“For solution providers, it gives a recurring revenue stream,” Walsh said. “They can provide the service to customers at a modest price and handle their regulatory and disaster-recovery needs without a significant investment in hardware.”

The software’s write-once, read-many technology allows data to be stored without being modified while providing an auditing trail to show who accessed it and when.

After the initial upload, the software backs up only data that changes. It can also back up changes to Exchange and SQL files while they are online. Since the data is backed up in the original file format, individual files can be accessed quickly, Walsh said.

Dave Esko, president of the consulting division of Unitec, a Hazelwood, Mo.-based system builder, said his company is setting up such a service using NovaStor software for its attorney, CPA, physician and other small-business clients, which typically have between 5 Gbytes and 20 Gbytes of data. “We do a lot of administrative work for [our clients],” he said. “And one thing we find is, folks just don’t back their things up.”

Unitec is using NAS technology connected to several T1 lines to provide a safe location for customers’ data, he said.
