Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer

For the third straight year, solution providers in the Certification Study deemed the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer the No. 1 most important certification to their business.

In the scorecard rankings, the MCSE placed sixth, speaking to the fact that Windows certifications are a must-have for partners rather than a unique differentiator in the marketplace.

One solution provider says the four new MCSE specializations--for security and messaging on the Windows Server 2000 and Windows Server 2003 platforms--are particularly important in light of changes to Microsoft’s 2004 partner program.

“Microsoft’s new partner program is now based on points, and diversified specializations and MCSEs have now become a vital point in moving up the certification trail,” said Michael Goldstein, vice president at LAN Associates, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “They’ve become very valuable.”

In the scorecard, the MCSE garnered eighth place for return on investment--calculated at 19.7 percent--and a respectable sixth for generating new business. Even so, only 27 percent of solution providers reported ROI improvements over the past 12 months.
