Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert

For Cisco partners, keeping Cisco Certified Internetwork Experts on staff can lead to Silver and Gold.

The CCIE family of certifications ranked No. 1 among the Big 8 on the Certification Study scorecard rankings in part because it is required to achieve the coveted Silver and Gold designations in Cisco’s partner program.

That was evident in the certification’s scorecard performance. Solution providers ranked it tops in bringing in new, incremental business, and they gave CCIEs the best pay raises, averaging 12.4 percent, in 2003. Solution providers rated the CCIE only No. 11 in return on investment but also indicated that ROI was improving over time, giving it a second place on this measure.

Partners say they get their money’s worth out of the $100,000-plus salaries CCIEs command because of the technical competence and expertise the Cisco certification brings and the difficulty in achieving it.

“It’s probably one of the hardest in the world,” said Doug Bowlds, vice president of AAC, a Vienna, Va.-based solution provider, on the rigorous CCIE testing process. “An average engineer has to take the exam three to four times before he passes it.”
