Motorola Enters Military With New Rugged Offerings

Joining the fray for military and first-response customers, Motorola released a new rugged notebook and mobile workstation that provide the full gamut of secure capabilities with optimized wireless computing performance. Built to U.S. Department of Defense standards, the ML910 rugged notebook offers an Intel Core Duo 1.66-GHz processor and an ATI Radeon X1400 discrete graphics controller from AMD. The 128-MB dedicated video memory and video capture card enable high-performance graphics and real-time video processing, and a hard drive heater allows start-up and operation in freezing temperatures. The notebook comes with a 13.3-inch widescreen display, fingerprint authentication and diagnostic software that monitors internal conditions and prevents outages. The vehicle-mountable MW810 mobile workstation supports multiple internal radios for multinetwork roaming, and an internal GPS system ensures accurate vehicle location.

NEC Keeps First-Responders Online

Standard methods of communication are often not an option when disaster strikes. With that in mind, NEC Unified Solutions released its Mobile Voice and Data Unit, which provides wireless voice, data and video communications through satellite access to government workers in the field. The unit relies on NEC's Univerge SV7000 Multiple Purpose System for voice and data networks and WL1500 wireless access points with DTerm phones and wireless handsets. It's available in preconfigured bundles to accommodate the specific requirements of end user communities. For example, a bundle for disaster recovery may require a standalone, self-sustaining system that provides increased access to desktop phones and voicemail systems. Equipment is housed in military-grade portable cases and includes satellite communications equipment and service. Pricing varies.
