HP Targets Smb Space With 1200 All-In-One

HP has added a new model to its line of all-in-one storage systems aimed at small businesses. The HP StorageWorks 1200 All-in-One Storage System enables users to combine both SATA and SAS within the 12-drive, 2U enclosure. The Storage Manager software tool includes wizard-driven setup and migration support for Microsoft Exchange 2007, designed to enable users to easily move from direct-attached storage, or DAS, to network-attached storage, or NAS. It also can provision iSCSI storage for servers running both the 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003. The StorageWorks 1200 is available now with 12 drive bays and up to 9 TB of capacity. The system will be sold mainly through the channel, HP says.

As 19-inch displays gain popularity, prices continue to decline. To wit, Envision Peripherals of Fremont, Calif., is now shipping the AOC 912Vwa-1, a Windows Vista Premium-certified, 19-inch flat-panel widescreen display, for $189. In the desktop display market, 19-inch displays are predicted to dethrone 17-inch monitors this year as the size of choice, according to market-research firm iSuppli. Widescreen desktop monitors, too, are expected to gain greater traction this year, particularly in the SOHO market. The new AOC displays support High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection, or HDCP, the Intel-developed standard that allows encrypted high-definition video content to be displayed. The monitor offers a resolution of 1,440-by-900 and a contrast ratio of 800-to-1.

Iomega Offers Souped-Up Storage

In May, Iomega plans to ship the next iteration of its highest-end NAS servers for SMBs. The StorCenter Pro NAS 450r Series are 1U rack-mount file servers that run on Windows Storage Server 2003 R2 and are powered by dual-core Xeon processors. The new box improves on the performance and power consumption of its predecessor, the 400r, which ran on an older version of Windows and used Intel Pentium processors. The 450r also includes hardware-based RAID (Levels 0, 1 or 5), to protect against data loss, and hot-swappable 7,200-RPM SATA II drives. It comes with a Microsoft Windows print server, which provides centralized support and management for up to five network printers, CA's eTrust antivirus software and EMC's Retrospect Express software for client-level and scheduled PC backup.
