Feeding The Need For Speed

DVD

Samsung is pushing serial ATA nowadays without a hybrid fitting to IDE, so the DVD is not backward-compatible with older motherboards. The SATA connection eliminates the need for master/slave jumpers. The Super-Writemaster, for instance, comes with a 20X SATA connector and power supply.

However, that connection makes the DVD work super fast, so it's hard to say whether the performance gain is coming from the DVD technology or the higher bandwidth.

To achieve the high speed, Samsung created a new Speed Adjustment Technology that matches the speed of the disk precisely through the writing process. A power control mechanism, which balances power on both sides of a disk, allows the drive circuitry to have a better handle on stability and performance. The drive also uses a balancing wheel to reduce vibration and increase its speed.

CRN Test Center engineers were able to back up 8 GB of compressed files in half the time it took last year with the SH-W164C with a smaller file.

The SH-S203N works at 20X DVD-R recording, 12X DVD-RAM recording, 12X DVD-R Dual Layer recording, 8X DVD+RW recording and 6X DVD-RW recording. The DVD drive comes with LightScribe technology, which burns any type of label on the reverse side of CDs and DVDs by focusing a light onto a dye coating. Even a year later, LightScribe technology is still fascinating to watch. CRN Test Center engineers tried a couple of DVDs with it and found it worked perfectly. Its awesome speed makes this DVD drive worthy of installing on workstations used for regular backups and video production stations.
