Case In Point, Jeb Carter, DefenderSoft

After several PCs at Fairway Ford in Henderson, Texas, were infected by viruses, the dealership realized it needed security that went beyond the consumer desktop antivirus products that had supposedly been protecting its computers.

Sporting a fairly good understanding of the security tools needed to protect Fairway’s PCs, business development manager Vincent Mullins figured he would do some research to find products and pricing that would best suit the dealership’s sub-50-node network. After going online to compare offerings from major vendors including Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro and others, Mullins concluded the dealership would have to spend a considerable amount of money to get what it needed.

But before committing to a large budgetary outlay, Mullins called Jeb Carter (above) at DefenderSoft, from which Fairway had purchased PCs in the past. Mullins had a trusted relationship with Carter, so he thought he might be able to negotiate a better price for the security solutions he found online.

Carter saw Fairway’s small network as the perfect fit for Computer Associates’ eTrust Antivirus version 7.1 solution, just one of the new breed of scaled-down security solutions from enterprise vendors. “It’s a suite of products that beats having to install several tools separately, and it’s perfect for a small business like Fairway,” Carter said. “You load it on the server and it even does the uninstall of the other security products.”

Mullins said: “I figured I could save a couple of hundred bucks, but ended up saving a ton.”
