POP Users Exchange Service

Published for the Week Of June 14, 2004

hese days, small businesses have more and more options when it comes to outsourcing complex IT processes such as supply chain management or backup and recovery.

So why should the same small businesses remain stuck using restrictive POP (point-of-presence) e-mail accounts the likes of Yahoo and Hotmail?

They shouldn’t, said Alex Yevelev, director of sales and marketing at Intermedia.net, New York. Not when Intermedia.net offers outsourcing services for Microsoft Exchange and Outlook for as little as $9.95 per mailbox.

“Over the last 6 months we have witnessed an increased interest in hosting Exchange and Outlook,” Yevelev said.

He credits the uptick in Intermedia.net’s mail hosting service to small businesses that either simply don’t have the IT wherewithal to expand beyond POP e-mail, or that find it simpler to upgrade to the latest Microsoft versions of Exchange and Outlook by outsourcing the service.

“We’ve seen small companies which used to support [Exchange and Outlook] in-house, but who have come to the point where it’s time to upgrade, and instead of install and migrate, they go with us,” Yevelev said.

Intermedia.net’s mail hosting service can be up and running in minutes and can include features such as data backup, spam filtering and antivirus protection.

Jay Street, president of Great Oaks Enterprises, an Atlanta-based IT consulting and outsourcing service for small businesses, applauds Intermedia.net’s e-mail hosting service for the seamless manner in which it complements Great Oaks’ own value-add.

“In the small-business sector, small-business guys are typically sheep led to slaughter when it comes to IT,” Street said. “They wind up at a local parts store or a superstore and get things they don’t need. But with Intermedia.net, in terms of being able to connect to Exchange and give them full collaboration for calendars, company contact lists and e-mail, they have outstanding tools and resources.”
