Netgear's Access Point Is On The Job

Luckey, who offers Netgear, D-Link and Linksys APs, said Netgear’s AP lineup enables GHA to provide more choice for small-business and SOHO customers.

etgear has expanded its RangeMax line of high-speed wireless networking products with a crafty new access point.

Netgear’s new RangeMax Wireless Access Point (WPN802) incorporates seven of the vendor’s internal Smart MIMO antennae. The result is a system that can dynamically adapt to the problems facing a wireless environment, such as angled hallways or interference from other wireless transmissions, and deliver as much as 10 times the coverage and speed of less-sophisticated 802.11g access points (APs), said Lianne Caetano, product line manager at the Santa Clara, Calif.-based networking vendor.

“Range is obviously a growing concern for wireless LAN deployments in office environments,” she said.

The RangeMax Wireless Access Point can manipulate its seven antennae into 127 unique configurations, helping to eliminate Wi-Fi dead spots and optimize the connection. Wireless security has been factored into the new offering with support for WPA-PSK 64-bit and 128-bit WEP encryption, as well as MAC address authentication, Caetano said.

With its $157 sticker price, the product is a good way to complement other wireless AP offerings from competing vendors such as D-Link Systems and Cisco Systems’ Linksys subsidiary, said Bill Luckey, vice president of sales and product management at GHA Technologies, a pure-play hardware and software reseller in Scottsdale, Ariz.
