Performance Punch: Apple Updates Mac Pro

Apple's Mac Pro will be available for purchase next week and starts at $2,499, a $300 price drop from previous iterations of the Apple machine. The upgrade of the Mac Pro comes on the same day that Apple updated its iMac and Mac Mini lines as well.

Apple's Mac Pro with a Xeon processor runs at speeds up to 2.93GHz with an integrated memory controller that has three channels of 1,066MHz DDR3 EEX memory. The new machine comes standard with a Nvidia GeForce GT 120 high-performance graphics card with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory.

The Mac Pro comes bundled with the Leopard operating system and includes Time Machine, Quick Look and iLife '09.

The Mac Pro also includes four direct-attach cable-free hard-drive carriers for upgrading internal storage up to 4 TB of memory when using 1-TB 7,200-rpm Serial ATA drives.

In addition, Apple is committing to being environmentally friendly with all of the upgrades it released. The Mac Pro meets and exceeds Energy Star 4.0 requirements and is an early adopter of Energy Star 5.0 requirements. Apple's Mac Pro enclosure is made of recyclable aluminum and the interior is designed to be material-efficient.
