NEC MultiSync LCD 4615: Big-Screen Digital Signage At Entry-Level Prices

NEC Display Solutions has always impressed us with its large-screen digital signage displays. So when we recently had the chance to review the new MultiSync LCD 4615, we weren't too surprised to find that it lived up to our expectations.

In 2008, NEC introduced the MultiSync 15 Series in response to customer requests for value-priced, commercial-grade displays. The 46-inch MultiSync LCD 4615 is the latest, and largest, addition to the series, which already includes 32-inch and 42-inch screens.

Specifically designed for digital signage and public viewing applications, the 4615 includes many of the desired features that the company's higher-level 20 series already has. With expectations of 18-hour-per- day operation, the 4615 has an advanced cooling system that includes on-board temperature sensors that can be accessed via an on-screen menu, as well as integrated fans. There is also a self-diagnostic feature with communication capability.

Testing the 4615 did not disappoint. Using the DisplayMate calibration suite, the display passed all 18 tests right out of the box, with excellent black and gray levels noticeably standing out. In addition, the 178-degree viewing angles (89 degrees in each direction) showed almost no glare at all. Blu-ray movies looked pristine with full high-definition, 1080p resolution (1920-x-1080), and NEC's 8ms (G-t-G) Rapid Response produced smooth moving pictures.

As with other models in the line, the 4615 has NEC's TileMatrix technology, which allows it to be part of a 16-display (4-x-4) video wall, while the TileComp feature compensates for the display's bezel size to create a more seamless wall.

Video input connections include: DVI-D 24-pin (HDCP), Analog 15-pin D-sub, Analog BNC, Composite (Shared RCA and BNC) or S-Video, and Component BNC (Y,Cb/Pb, Cr/Pr).

There is also a scheduler with a 'round-the-clock feature, which allows for seven-day scheduling of content via the different inputs, and powering of the display.

Using NEC's NaviSet software, all of the settings can be adjusted via a graphical interface using a keyboard and mouse. Advanced remote access and diagnostics capabilities are available with the administrator version of the software. Settings, as well as other features, can be locked to avoid tampering.

Available now with a current street price of approximately $1,900, the MultiSync LCD 4615 offers a fantastic picture and feature-set to businesses looking for a relatively affordable entry into digital signage.
