Jobs found himself in elite company this week as the Apple chief executive was spied by paparazzi leaving Apple's Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. TMZ.com, the online and television celebrity gossip hounds, posted the grainy photo smack on its front page among tales of Tim McGraw, Michael Jackson and Puff Daddy.
The TMZ image is the first known photo of the Apple co-founder since he took a leave of absence in January for a liver transplant. Jobs has been back at work for roughly a month.
The Jobs photo bore a striking resemblance to photos of celebrities leaving Starbucks, a posh night club or rehab.
The image raises the question of what business a tech exec has being sandwiched between TMZ's typical tabloid fodder.
Jobs has taken on a celebrity persona, there's no doubt about that. He has legions of fans that hang on his every word and every creation. He rarely gives interviews and is hardly ever seen outside of scheduled Apple events.
But does a photo of Jobs leaving work really require front-page gossip news treatment? Is TMZ putting Jobs on the same level as Jon and Kate (Plus 8) Gosselin? I'd also be curious what Jobs thinks of his photo sharing the same online real estate frequented by Paris Hilton and the cast of MTV's "The Hills."
My guess is it was such a slow celeb news day that TMZ had to turn to high tech. What's next, paparazzi stalking Steve Ballmer around Microsoft HQ?
