Logitech Rolls Out Glass-Gliding Mice

Logitech Wednesday unveiled two mice that promise to take the pain out of scrolling and are able to navigate smooth surfaces such as glass.

Both devices, the Logitech Performance Mouse MX and the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX, use the company's Darkfield technology.

The problem with optical and traditional laser mice is that they rely on surface irregularities so that mice sensors can track movements, the company said.

However, Darkfield uses the smallest possible details to create a micro-road map of the surface, which provides better precision on more surfaces, such as clear glass (4mm minimum thickness) and lacquered desks.

The larger Logitech Performance Mouse MX model is compatible with PCs, while the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX is intended to be used with notebooks.

Both devices have Logitech Advanced 2.4GHz wireless technology, Logitech's Unifying receiver, four customizable thumb buttons and a flexible recharging system.

On the company's blog, several posters said they were looking forward to the release of the products, but some Logitech loyalists lamented that the new mice don't feature SmartShift. The technology can detect active applications and tasks at hand and instantly switch between the two scrolling modes as needed.

Both mice will hit the market in the U.S. and Europe later this month. The Logitech Performance Mouse MX retails for $99.99 and the smaller Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX is $79.99.
