Oops, Roddenberry Didn't Own The First Mac Plus After All

Profiles in History, an auctioneer of Hollywood memorabilia, originally described the computer as a Mac Plus with serial number #F4200NUM0001. Apple gave the computer to Roddenberry as a gift, and Profiles in History described it as the first Mac Plus ever built because of the "0001" serial number.

But it turns out the computer was an early Macintosh 128 which Apple upgraded for Roddenberry. People began pointing out the discrepancy after photos of the computer with its visible model/serial number panel were posted online. Late Thursday, Profiles in History issued a correction.

Profiles in History is now describing the computer as "an early production Macintosh 128." The auctioneer said there is no doubt that the computer belonged to Roddenberry because it's accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Roddenberry's son, Rod.

The Mac is among memorabilia Profiles in History is auctioning off Oct. 8 and 9. It has an estimated sale price of $800 to $1,200, according to the auctioneer.
