Avaya has unveiled a new line of voice over IP (VoIP) telephones designed to support custom and off-the-shelf productivity applications.

The 4621, 4622 and 4625 IP phones feature support for Avaya's Phone Applications Gateway solution, a flexible application development platform based on technology from Citrix Systems supporting both custom and packaged applications. The Avaya Design Studio allows users to develop new, on-screen Web applications and to use the Avaya Broadcast Server to compose and transmit detailed Web-based messages.

The new phones also feature enhanced graphics capabilities that enable businesses to share text and visual information instantly on a large, full-color. back-lit display. The phones include an integrated wireless markup language (WML) 1.3 browser to enable the delivery of Web-based content. The 4622 IP phone provides features specific to call center applications, including support for dual headsets and eliminating the need for a handset.

According to Geoffrey Baird, vice president of Avaya's Communications Appliance Division, these new features push IP telephony beyond point-to-point communications. "Telephones now operate as intelligent endpoints on the network, capable of delivering a variety of information in a variety of ways," Baird said in a statement. "Sophisticated applications give businesses the ability to integrate voice more effectively into business processes and break through the clutter of email, voice mail and word-of-mouth when sharing timely information."
