VoIP has matured into a multimillion-dollar business that has created opportunities for players from the large telecommunications giants down to the local solution providers that represent VoIP equipment and solutions.

Likewise, the equipment opportunities extend from the server to the handsets enabling the service. One component recently examined by CRN Test Center engineers was the 3Com 3103 Manager Phone. The recently released Gigabit telephone is rich in call-management capabilities, which are essential for success with VoIP solutions.

One thing that stood out right away was the device’s 320-x-120 display. The LED makes it easier to handle most phone-related chores, such as looking up contact information or directories. All management and configuration tasks are performed through a browser-based interface coupled with adequate Web-based support from 3Com.

Something to note is that in order to use the 3103 Manager Phone, the existing infrastructure must be comprised of a 3Com NBX IP telephony system, more specifically, release 5.0.

The unit is priced at $350, and 3Com covers all its products with a lifetime warranty.

3Com’s partner program provides marketing assistance and sales support for competitive-bid situations. Sales and marketing tools, technical resources and training materials are available on 3Com’s dedicated partner Web site.

Solution providers that offer VoIP solutions can expect margin on the 3Com IP phone hardware itself as well as on service contracts that support the equipment.
