  • "From the California coast to the streets of Taipei, these Hall of Fame members shed light on the world."

tar light, star bright, who'll be the first star I see tonight? Will it be Chuck Geschke of fonts and type, or maybe Steve Raymund of distribution might? Will I see Philippe Kahn, who gave Microsoft fright, or Stan Shih, raised in his mother's light? Geschke or Raymund, Kahn or Shih, it really doesn't matter because in Vegas they'll all be. But they won't be alone in the desert sand, they will be with the folks with PalmPilots in hand. There will be a Dubinsky, a Hawkins and a Colligan in town, as well as two Inatomes, Rick and Joe, walking around. This father and son duo built a channel empire for all to follow, they've got reselling in their bones, right down to the marrow. There will be developer gurus under the Vegas lights, Hall of Famers who brought the industry to new heights. There is Ray Ozzie of Lotus Notes and Drew Major of NetWare fame. And then there's Bill Joy, who made Java more than a household name.

Welcome to CRN's third annual Industry Hall of Fame issue. This year, CRN is adding 12 new inductees to the 25 current Hall of Fame members, rounding out what I would like to call the industry's "All Century Team." In addition to awarding those individuals who have built high-tech empires, this year we drilled down into the industry a bit to recognize some of the most important programmers who wrote hundreds of thousands of lines of code to move this industry forward. These are the utility players of the business and are just as important to the team as the CEO sluggers.

Ozzie took Lotus and groupware to the next level with Notes and actually may have saved the company in the process. Major and his team's development of NetWare also was as crucial to the future of networking and Novell. In fact, some point to Major as the sole creator of the LAN industry. Then there is Joy, one of Sun's original players. Joy is credited with the early development of Unix, contributing to the architecture of Sun's SPARC chip and, of course, with the development of Java. CRN is inducting Kahn for his impact on the software industry,in terms of innovation with Quattro Pro and his guerrilla marketing tactics, and Geschke, the other half of Adobe, for bringing us desktop publishing and changing the entire printing process. Then there is Shih, the leader of Acer who against all odds built a mammoth computer business and now has his fingers and components in everybody's machine. Being recognized too are the creators of the PalmPilot, which revolutionized the handheld computing market, the future of this crazy business. Also on the All Century Team is Tech Data's Raymund, who has methodically built a distribution icon known for solid results, careful global expansion and innovation in logistics. And finally, CRN is acknowledging the early work of Joe and Rick Inatome, whose core reselling business evolved into what is Inacom today. Their early influence on vendor policies, franchising and selling into corporations set the path for the rest of the channel to follow.

I wish I may, I wish I might, congratulate all the Hall of Famers tonight.
