Title: CTO, Salesforce.com
Academic Credentials: B.S., Electrical Engineering, Computer Science; M.B.A., Washington University
Creative Inspiration: "My dad, even if it's sappy."
Favorite Gadget: "Does my new DLP HDTV television count as a gadget? If not, then the Home Theater Master programmable remote I'm about to buy."

n 1999, Marc Benioff told his friend Bobby Yazdani, CEO of Sabas Software, about his idea to build a hosted sales-force-automation solution.

Yazdani just happened to know two savvy developers who he thought could make Benioff's dream a reality. "Bobby made the introductions, and the idea behind Salesforce.com was born," remembers Dave Moellenhoff, now CTO.

Moellenhoff's team built the software from the ground up using open-source technology. Salesforce.com also uses a multitenancy approach in which every component of its systems is shared.

Today, solution providers and customers view Salesforce.com as a development platform. A new effort called Sforce, which is Moellenhoff's baby, gives partners the ability to customize Salesforce.com's components or build entirely new applications.

"Not only have they provided the development community with a system that is open with APIs that allow us to take third-party applications like HR and make them talk easily to Salesforce.com, now we can build customized applications that interact with their application, which is a great development tool for us," says Eric Berridge, principal at Blue Wolf Group, a New York-based systems integrator.
