To push the limits of technology, CRN Lab Director John Yacono built a new Ultimate PC--the 11th unit thus far--before an audience of system builders and component vendors at the XChange Tech Builder conference in Coronado, Calif., this May. The components showcased in the PC were selected for excellence in innovation, functionality and/or performance. This event's Ultimate PC included a 3.06GHz Intel Pentium 4 hyperthreading processor with an 800MHz front-side bus, 2 Gbytes of 400MHz DDR memory, two hard drives and a built-in UPS. An Antec case with a clear-view side panel, glowing fans and woven-steel drive cables added a customized feel.
Some of the most dramatic advances in this revision of the Ultimate PC are indicative of what the future holds for system design. The motherboard, for example, features a Serial ATA controller that enables software RAID. It also features a mezzanine bus to support its Gigabit Ethernet port at near wire speed, overcoming the PCI bus bottleneck that cuts Gigabit speed in half. The motherboard also supports the processor's 800MHz front-side bus, up from the 533MHz bus on the last Ultimate PC. The bus will give the Pentium 4 architecture headroom for growth, according to Test Center tests.
Looking at the storage used, the Ultimate PC has one of the first DVD/RW drives that handles both the plus and minus standards. Drives like this will become commonplace as there is not significant reason to choose one standard over the other.Speaking of standards, this was the first Ultimate PC to feature an IDE hard drive. That is because SCSI drives are no longer the capacity leaders. A SCSI drive was also included in the Ultimate PC, however, for its performance, which is still greater than IDE or Serial ATA--at least for the short term.
Even the mouse had a key innovation that may become more popular: an inertial gyroscope. While the wireless mouse can be used on a desk surface like any optical unit, it can be picked up and moved around in space to move the cursor. It sounds odd but is very easy even for nontechnical people to master and is great for presentations.
Pressure in the marketplace in causing everyone to seek out market-differentiating solutions. None stands out more, or has become more trendy, than an interesting case design. The Test Center believes that form factor shifts and unique case designs will remain popular for the high-end techie crowd from this point forward. Riding that trend, the Ultimate PC case had many eye-catching features in addition to practical ones.
Both the sound and video systems are signs of the digital convergence trend. The video card features a TV tuner, PVR capability, video capture and an RF remote for cursor and program control. The sound subsystem is 7.1-channel Dolby and THX-certified and powers a high-quality 4.1 surround-sound speaker system.
