There's going to be a showdown of sorts in Salt Lake City on Monday.

As Novell kicks off its annual Brainshare event, open source critics are hosting their own, rival, event across the street at the Shiloh Inn. The stated goal? To rain on Novell's parade.

What has brought this crowd, led by Bruce Perens, to this pass? Novell's pact with Microsoft which open sourcers view as a literal pact with the devil. Now there's talk about adjusting the evolving the GPL 3 to thwart the deal.

At any rate, according to the invitation, the topics of the meeting will be:

"The Novell Microsoft agreement.

Novell's bad faith actions toward their own developers who licensed software under Novell's bad-faith actions toward their own developers who licensed software under the GPL, and the community's response.

GPL 3, and how it will prevent Novell from going forward with new innovations from the Open Source developer community, while other Linux distributions will be able to use the same software.

Software patents vs. Open Source."

So it looks like high noon in Utah.
