For the first time in a dozen years, the VARBusiness 500 is guaranteed to have a new No. 1 company topping the list of the biggest and best companies in the North America channel.

For the past 11 years, IBM Global Services has sat atop the list, far outpacing any of its rivals. Last year, IGS posted $47.4 billion in sales; the revenue of its next closest rival -- EDS -- tallied to $19.8 billion. IBM's services arm is so big that last year its revenue surpassed the bottom 400 companies on the list plus the revenue of Lockheed Martin ($9.8 billion).

If no company ever comes close to surpassing IGS, how can I make such a claim that there will be a new No. 1 company? Easy. We changed the methodology.

This year, VARBusiness is segregating the services arms of IT hardware and software vendors from the VARBusiness 500. More than 50 companies will move to our new top Vendor Services list. Additionally, we are a lot clearer on the difference between a pure-play IT vendor and an independent software vendor.

Between these changes and a healthy year for mergers and acquisitions, the 2007 VARBusiness 500 will welcome more than 100 new companies to the list and crown a new king of the channel hill. We'll keep that a secret for now.

The VARBusiness 500 team, under the leadership of senior editor Jennifer Bosavage and research director Marilyn O'Hara, is putting the finishing touches on this year's list. Already we're seeing some interesting trends in terms of revenue growth, the evolution of services, peer-to-peer partnering, technology adoption and vendor preferences.

Keep your eye out for some of the early results and preview stories on our VARBusiness 500 Web site. The annual VARBusiness 500 Conference and Awards in New York City on June 11-12 will feature more than 100 executives from leading solution provider companies, as well as some of the top vender channel leaders. VARBusiness is putting together a content-rich program that will include topics such as winning strategies for growth, managing human resources, techniques for technology adoption and more.

The VARBusiness 500 awards will recognize the superior achievement of deserving solution providers. The ceremony will feature Stephen J. Dubner, co-author of "Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything."

This year's conference and event promises to be the best in history of the VARBusiness 500. Be sure to register today.
