We asked our leading panel of technologists from the VARBusiness 500 what their favorite technologies are for the coming year. Here is what they told us:

  • Kyle VonBucholz, wireless program manager at PlanetGov VB112: "I believe that the EOS Mobile Cruiser is leading edge since it is a very powerful handheld computer that can perform a variety of functions over and above what a ruggedized laptop can perform today. In addition, the Procera switch because of its ability to read the entire datastream and assist the network manager in managing his wired and wireless networks. With the wireless solutions, I believe they all have significant promise and all of them are constantly improving their solutions."

  • David Nolan, vice president for business development at Forsythe Technology VB86: "The whole security market could be considered emerging as well. There is a lot of great technology in the market today, and over the next few years we will deliver amazing technology to the marketplace.

  • Ned Stringham, CEO of SBI Group VB169: "We see lots of rich Internet applications in more transactional, complex user-interaction areas, and are looking at emerging Web-services standards, such as WSRP (Web services for remote portals). Market-leading companies are adopting Web services and portal technologies, and these will also experience more leading-edge implementations. We also think caching is going to be important. The ability to have your content and transactions available in a highly available manner across the globe is also key. We are also using technologies like Macromedia Flash in new ways and taking more advantage of its capabilities, such as the ability to push real-time financial quotes and remote trade execution for bond traders."

  • Quy Nguyen, CEO of Allyance Communications: "In the past year, Virtual Private Networks and Voice over IP solutions have been hot topics for us. We see VPN solutions producing 20 to 30 percent savings to our customers."
