Outdated IT Management
Using PPM to help prioritize the use of limited IT resources was the focus of a presentation by Matt Light, Gartner research vice president. "The management of IT really has not evolved to keep up with the reality of IT," he said, noting that many IT projects are still managed as they were in the 1970s and 1980s. "That's just not going to work in this century. The demand is just too great for the IT resources to meet the demand. So you must prioritize," he said.
One way to do that is to focus on projects that provide a strategic advantage, not just computing utility. "A project is not justified just on its [return on investment], but where it fits into the larger scheme of things," he said.
