Sony Ericsson Launches Xperia X10, Its First Android Phone

Sony Ericsson didn't confirm pricing, launch date or in which countries the phone will be available. What is known is that the Xperia X10 -- known as "Rachel" in its development phase -- is 3G- and Wi-Fi compatible, has a touch screen, has an 8-megapixel camera and can support apps from either the Google Android Market or Sony Ericsson's own Play Now Arena.
The Xperia X10 joins a crowded roster of smartphone launches for the fall, including many that run on Android, the season's white-hot mobile OS. The Xperia X10 runs on Android version 1.6, according to Sony Ericsson, and sports a 1GHz Snapdragon processor by Qualcomm.
Sony Ericsson is also touting the phone's social networking capabilities through such features as Sony Ericsson Timescape, which aggregates various communication feeds from sources like Facebook, Twitter and e-mail, and Sony Ericsson Mediascape, with which users access Web content like music and videos.
"The Xperia X10 and the family of phones launching in the first half of 2010 underpin our commitment to an open and multiplatform strategy that maximizes choice for the consumer and delivers the best possible consumer experience," said Bert Nordberg, Sony Ericsson's president, in a statement. "The reaction from our global operator partners to the Xperia X10 has been extremely positive and we will be rolling out across the world including Japan from the first half of 2010."
