Kelly seems to be canvassing all new media, including social networking and video-sharing, in addition to creating a dedicated Web site. He has posted a video on YouTube, and is encouraging his followers on Facebook to share the link. Kelly set up his candidacy Facebook page on Wednesday, and within the first several hours attracted more than 300 supporters.
On his fund-raising site, Kelly says, "California's justice system, and our political system as a whole, needs radical change to serve our citizens more effectively. Politics as usual won't cut it anymore."
Politics is not a new venture for Kelly -- more like a return to old stomping grounds. Before joining Facebook, Kelly was an aide to President Bill Clinton. Kelly was a policy adviser for Clinton's White House Domestic Policy Council and Department of Education, and worked on domestic programs including a successful initiative to hire 100,000 new police officers in communities. Kelly also played a role in creating AmeriCorps, a network of national service programs that engages Americans in community service for education, public safety, health and the environment.
Among numerous other Democrats eyeing the attorney general post are former California state Assemblyman Joe Canciamilla and San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris. However, both have said they won't run if California Attorney General Jerry Brown decides to seek re-election.
Sen. Tom Harman, R-Calif., has also expressed interest in running for the post.
