Macromedia Takes Volume Licensing To New Levels

The company also will unveil a significant update to its Studio MX tools suite, designed to provide developer tools for building media-intensive Web applications that perform like desktop programs, said Norm Meyrowitz, Macromedia's president of products.

The new volume licensing program has two tiers, the Base Volume License Option for small businesses and the High Volume License Option for larger customers, said Erin Romano, Macromedia's director of worldwide sales operations.

Macromedia's Erin Romano: Solution providers can pass on discounts to customers.

The base option enables customers to receive volume discounts for 10 points rather than the previous entry-level requirement of 20 points, she said. Solution providers can pass on the discounts to their customers. Macromedia, San Francisco, awards points for each product it offers, with the number of points based on the price of each product. For example, the Web design tool Dreamweaver is valued at 2 points, Romano said.

The high volume option requires 100 points for a customer to receive one of six levels of discount. Under that option, customers are guaranteed the same level of discount they receive upon first purchase for two years after the original purchase, Romano said.

The two-year guarantee makes it easier for customers to manage their budgets for future product purchases, said Milan Mehta, business partner manager of Macromedia at Software Spectrum, a Dallas-based reseller of Macromedia products.

"Customers know what discounts and pricing they can expect, which gives them an element of stability," Mehta said.

The new Studio MX tools suite slated to be unveiled this week is subject to the new volume licensing model, Romano said.

The product, Studio MX 2004, includes new versions of Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX, Fireworks MX and a brand-new tool, Flash MX Professional, which provides a forms-based environment for multimedia design, Meyrowitz said. It will ship in September and cost $899 for new users, with a $399 upgrade for existing Studio MX customers.
