Pioneer Sues Samsung SDI For Patent Infringement

MANHASSET, N.Y. — Pioneer Corp. has filed a patent against Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. (SDI) and several other Samsung companies in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, claiming Samsung infringed several Pioneer patents related to plasma display panel (PDP) technology.

The patents are U.S. Patent No. 5,182,489, relating to plasma display brightness, and Patent No. 5,640,068, relating to plasma display surface discharge.

Pioneer is seeking a court order against to prevent Samsung from selling the infringing SDI products, and seeks compensation for past infringement.

According to Pioneer, the company has been negotiating with Samsung SDI to reach an agreement on licensing its PDP patent portfolio, since April 2005.

Display technology patent disputes have become commonplace as display suppliers jockey for share in a market where supplier consolidation continues.

Samsung SDI sued Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. for allegedly violating flat-panel display IP, in April.
