Cognos and Business Objects Follow Different Paths To Strengthen Data Quality Lineups

Managing data quality has traditionally been an IT management issue. But now data quality "is becoming more and more of a business problem" as business intelligence and performance management tools are broadly used throughout organizations and those tools tap into data from a greater variety of information sources, says Jennifer Francis, market development vice president at Cognos.

This week Cognos will begin reselling Informatica Data Quality and Informatica Data Explorer products as part of its performance management portfolio. While those products are already integrated with Cognos' software as part of an existing technology partnership between the two companies, Cognos is now reselling the Informatica products under the new deal. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cognos is also offering several data quality-related professional services built around the Informatica products. Cognos has developed its own rapid data quality assessment service and it will resell two other data quality-related services from Informatica. Cognos and Informatica are also jointly offering data integration services to customers.

The data quality products and services will be available to Cognos' channel partners for resale, Francis says.

Last week Business Objects announced that it is acquiring Fuzzy Informatik, a Ludwigsburg, Germany-based developer of data quality management software. Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to close in October, weren't disclosed.

Business Objects markets data quality tools as part of its Enterprise Information Management (EIM) product line. Last year the company acquired Firstlogic, a data quality software vendor, for $69 million and added its products to the EIM lineup. The vendor is expected to add the Fuzzy Informatik products to the EIM suite as well.
