Microsoft Fixes Latest Windows Server Update Glitch
The latest problem arose Monday when users of Microsoft Small Business Server running WSUS 2.0 and WSUS 3.0 began receiving SQL errors after synchronizing with Microsoft Update.
On Tuesday, Bobbie Harder, program manager for Windows Server Update Service (WSUS) group, said the problem resulted from Microsoft mistakenly using double quotes -- which can't be processed by the WSUS administration console -- when renaming a product category pertaining to future updates for its Forefront line of security products.
Microsoft discovered the error and removed the double quotes Monday morning. "This will fix the issue for any impacted WSUS server the next time it synchronizes with Microsoft's servers," Harder wrote in a post to the WSUS product team blog.
Harder also offered instructions on how WSUS users can perform a manual synchronization to expedite a solution.
The issue affected WSUS servers that synchronized with Microsoft servers between 5 p.m. Sunday and 11 a.m. Monday Pacific Time, according to the Redmond, Wash.-based vendor.
Neither WSUS users whose servers didn't synchronize with Microsoft, nor end users connecting directly with Windows Update, Microsoft Update, or Automatic Updates were affected by the problem, Harder noted.
The snafu is one of several that have plagued WSUS recently. Late last month, several Microsoft customers and partners said their machines running WSUS were downloading and installing an update package for Windows Desktop Search (WDS) and subsequently rebooting, even when users hadn't chosen the automatic update setting.
