Adobe, Facebook Partner On Flash Developer Tools For Social Apps
March 31, 2009 7:56 AM ET
Facebook and Adobe have struck a partnership to offer Flash tools to developers to build new applications for the Facebook platform, according to both companies. Facebook is now offering "official support for the ActionScript 3.0 Client Library for Facebook Platform," according to Josh Elman, program manager, Facebook Platform, in a video on Facebook's developer Web site. "Facebook's long looked to Flash to provide some really rich, interactive experiences. We launched our platform in 2007 and were amazed by how many developers actually use Flash to build some really, really rich social applications that can go way beyond what you can normally do in a browser," Elman said in the video.
Developers for ActionScript 3.0 can now more easily build rich Flash experiences to access the social features of Facebook Platform from external Web sites using Facebook Connect, from applications on Facebook or from desktop applications, according to Facebook. The ActionScript 3.0 Client Library for Facebook Platform is free and available for download.
"We've seen a great community of people try to build tools to help developers more easily build with Flash. There's some great open-source libraries around Action Script but working with [Adobe] we're excited about how we can make it more officially supported," Elman said in the video.
This library supports all Facebook API methods and will be updated as new features are released on Facebook Platform.
