Advanced virtualization capabilities and new networking technologies top the list of the enhancements in OpenSolaris 2009.06, a new release of the open-source version of Sun Microsystem's Solaris operating system.
Sun debuted the new release Monday at its 2009 CommunityOne West conference in San Francisco.
Oracle is in the process of buying Sun Microsystems for $7.4 billion and the Solaris operating system, the platform for a lot of Oracle software, is a critical driver of the acquisition.
As businesses try to take advantage of the growing range of virtualization hardware and software products, networking often has been "the laggard" in the technology stack, said Charlie Boyle, product marketing director for data center software at Sun.
OpenSolaris 2009.06 includes networking technology developed under the name Project Crossbow which, for the first time, offers networking capabilities designed for virtualization, according to Sun. Under Project Crossbow, the operating system provides virtual network interfaces that work in combination with multicore, multithreaded processors, Sun said.
The new OpenSolaris release provides enhancements in its storage management capabilities, adding flash storage support to Sun's ZFS file system technology for managing the large-scale pools of high-performance storage often found in virtualized environments. The OS also offers native support for the Microsoft CIFS file system, a move that allows transparent use of files across Windows, Linux and Solaris systems, Sun said.
Sun also has expanded its SunSpectrum Support portfolio of services for OpenSolaris subscriptions.
