Adobe Offers Cloud-Computing Option For LiveCycle Development Tools

Adobe Systems has released an on-demand version of its LiveCycle Enterprise software development platform, expanding the company's presence in the cloud-computing arena.

The new LiveCycle Managed Services ES2 is a subscription-based version of the LiveCycle Enterprise Suite that Adobe debuted in October. The development environment helps businesses develop and deploy cloud-based, rich Internet applications such as customer facing software that extends the value of legacy back-end systems.

LiveCycle Managed Services ES2, hosted on Amazon Web Service's Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) platform, offers customers a new deployment option, said Paul McNamara, Adobe's cloud computing entrepreneur-in-residence.

"It radically simplifies the deployment of LiveCycle," he said in an interview, noting that developers can roll out projects at a much quicker pace with the hosted system.

Adobe said the system is best-suited for development projects that require rapid business innovations, must be developed and tested quickly and/or in an on-demand environment, and may have a limited lifespan.

While the on-demand version of the system largely targets the same mid-market and enterprise customers as the on-premise version, the new release will help Adobe reach smaller businesses and companies in specific vertical industries. Adobe is offering 24-hour support in conjunction with the service.

Developers can subscribe to the software starting today while the production version of the platform will be generally available March 8. Pricing starts around $50,000 per year based on the specific modules selected.
