Adobe plans to make its Adobe AIR technology that develops apps that work across devices and platforms available for the Google Android platform late this year.
The online Website Engadget on Monday reported that Adobe said it hopes to have its Adobe AIR for Android runtimes available in the Android Market sometime after the fourth quarter of 2010.
Adobe AIR is technology that allows Web applications to be run as stand-alone client applications without a browser. It enables developers to use HTML, JavaScript, Adobe Flash software, and ActionScript to build to such applications in a consistent way across devices and platforms.
The latest version of Adobe AIR includes the ability to access a smartphone's camera, microphone, accelerometer, and GPS, and provides hardware GPU acceleration and the ability to work with multitouch screens, Engadget said.
Adobe said most Android devices supporting Android 2.1 (Eclair) and Android 2.1 (FroYo) will support the AIR for Android software development kit. However, Adobe will only test and certify AIR for Android on the Google Nexus One and Motorola Droid smart phones.
Adobe has published a list of some AIR for Android apps along with links to blogs and videos about them.
About 7,000 developers have already signed up to work on the new version of AIR for Android, according to VentureBeat.
