Software AG will acquire Terracotta Inc., a developer of in-memory computing technology, in a deal that will allow Software AG to expand its cloud-computing offerings and boost the performance of its business process management applications.
Software AG, which said Monday that it expects to complete the acquisition in June, did not disclose how much it is paying for privately held Terracotta.
Terracotta's in-memory processing technology can store up to a terabyte of data in-memory and is the de facto caching standard for enterprise Java, according to Software AG. It provides data access up to 1,000 times faster than access to database systems.
“The integration of Terracotta’s technology with our product portfolio is a major step in ensuring that our customers can fully benefit from the convergence of cloud computing, the mobile web, complex event processing and real-time, multi-party collaboration through unprecedented levels of performance and scalability,” said Software AG CTO Wolfram Jost, in a statement.
Software AG also gains access to Terracotta's large open-source community. “Software AG is committed to fully supporting Terracotta’s open-source communities in further developing this next generation in-memory technology,” Jost said.
Software AG plans to incorporate technology from San Francisco-based Terracotta into its "business process excellence" projects that involve complex event processing, mobile technology, cloud distribution and virtualization. The company expects to debut the first combined Software AG-Terracotta products in the fourth quarter.
