The launch of Windows 8 may be two weeks away, but Microsoft is already taking orders for the new PC operating system.

Starting today, consumers can reserve a Windows 8 Pro packaged DVD through several retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, Staples, Office Depot and the Microsoft Store, according to a blog post by Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft's Windows evangelist.

The DVD carries an estimated retail price tag of $69.99.

But, consumers who are willing to wait until the official Oct. 26 launch date will be able to buy the software for $39.99 through Windows.com using the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant.

People who bought a PC with Windows 7 after June 2, 2012, up through Jan. 31, 2013, are eligible for a Windows 8 Pro upgrade for $14.99 -- an offer that's redeemable starting Oct. 26.

The upgrade promotions, both retail and online, run only until Jan. 31, 2013.

Also starting today, consumers and businesses can begin ordering PCs and devices with Windows 8 from such vendors as Acer, Asus, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Samsung and Sony, according to LeBlanc.
