Big Data Venture HStreaming Nabs Funding From Ex-Vertica CEO

former Vertica CEO Chris Lynch.

HStreaming CEO Jana Uhlig said in an emailed statement to CRN that the funds from Atlas totaled $1 million and marked the company's first round of investor funding.

The San Francisco-based startup -- which earned a spot on CRN's Emerging Vendors of 2012 list -- specializes in making big data analytics tools for creating realtime dashboards and reports. HStreaming performs analysis on both structured and unstructured data, such as the data collected from next-generation sources like video and embedded sensors.

HStreaming is built upon the open-source Apache Hadoop framework and, according to the company, is compatible with all major Hadoop distributions, including Cloudera, MapR, Amazon Elastic MapReduce, Hortonworks, EMC and IBM.

Uhlig said in the email that HStreaming's most common use cases include video analytics, particularly among military intelligence agencies, fraud analytics, and network analytics and optimization. Advertising agencies also have leveraged HStreaming to analyze mobile users' behavior and roll out more effective advertisements based on those findings, Uhlig said.

Demand for HStreaming's solutions, she continued, has been strong.

"Until now, we have been three people only, but there is so much interest for realtime analytics, we could not handle all the requests," Uhlig said. "So, we partnered with Chris [Lynch]. He is bringing the right skills and experience to the table that goes beyond just funding. He is helping us to scale the company to meet the demand."

HStreaming leans on system integrators to help with implementation services, particularly in government agencies, but does not have a formal channel program at this point. However, Uhlig said the new funding from Atlas Ventures ultimately could give HStreaming the bandwidth to launch one.

"We don't have a formal program for SIs yet, since we could not even handle all the in-bound interest, but with Chris' funding and team expansion, we plan on establishing one very soon," Uhlig said. "Our main focus forward is sales and we see a great strategic value in working with SIs."

HStreaming is the latest of several big data startups to be backed by Cambridge, Mass.-based Atlas Ventures. The firm also has plunked down cash for digital marketing company DataXu, along with Hadapt, a startup that makes solutions for performing SQL-based analysis on massive sets of data.
