MapR Technologies is teaming up with Ubuntu Linux developer Canonical for a version of the Hadoop big data platform that runs on Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu/MapR package will include the MapR M3 edition of Hadoop supporting Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and 12.10. The software will be available through Canonical's Ubuntu Partner Archive starting April 25, the companies said Thursday.

"Our customers want optimized workloads to run in their cloud and now, with the addition of MapR M3 as an easily deployable and enterprise-grade Hadoop solution, we are providing Ubuntu customers with an effective way to implement big data into their operations," said Kyle MacDonald, Canonical's vice president of cloud computing, in a statement.

MapR is one of several vendors, including Cloudera and Hortonworks, that offer distributions of the Apache Software Foundation's Hadoop platform bundled with additional tools and services. MapR M3 is a free edition bundled with the HBase database, Pig tools for developing analytical applications, Hive data warehouse system, Sqoop data transfer software and other Hadoop-related components.

The companies also said their partnership would benefit users of the OpenStack Infrastructure-as-a-Service cloud computing project that's based on Apache Software Foundation open-source software. The two are developing a Juju charm that OpenStack adopters can use to deploy MapR within their private and public cloud computing environments.

Juju is Canonical's cloud services deployment and management system. Juju Charms are preconfigured deployment tools for specific Web services that run on Ubuntu Linux on Open Stack-based private clouds or public cloud systems such as Amazon Web Services and HP Cloud.

The companies said the MapR Juju Charm would be available April 25 as part of the 13.04 Ubuntu release.

MapR also said that the source code for the component packages of the MapR distribution of Apache Hadoop is now publicly available on GitHub.
