CES 2007: Netgear Showcases Internet Receiver For TVs

The Digital Entertainer HD was unveiled Monday at the Consumer Electronics Shows in Las Vegas, a day before Apple Computer is expected to launch a similar device called iTV at the Macworld conference in San Francisco.

The Netgear product streams to a TV online video, music, radio programs, news feeds, and other content. In addition, the device automatically discovers and organizes in a single library media files from other devices attached to a home network. Those devices could include Windows and Mac computers and USB-connected hardware such as digital music players.

The Digital Entertainer HD EVA8000 is the latest multimedia-streaming device from Netgear, which also makes the Digital Entertainer EVA700. The latest product is a step up in that it includes a high-definition multimedia interface, or HDMI, port for displaying video at higher resolutions and transmitting digital surround sound to an audio receiver.

Netgear also introduced on Monday a dual-mode cordless phone called the SPH200D, which can connect to a home network router and a standard wall jack to support both landline calls and calls made over the Internet through Skype.
