SonicWall Bundles UTM With Security Appliances

Originally launched two years ago, TotalSecure combines SonicWall's low end TZ 180 and TZ 190 security appliances with a bundle of antivirus, antispyware, intrusion prevention and content filtering services, said John Gordineer, director of product management at the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based vendor.

While customers previously could add UTM services to their appliances only by paying an additional subscription, they now come enabled for one year and also come with reporting tools and 24/7 support, Gordineer added.

SonicWall expects its new TZ 180 appliance to become the cornerstone of the TotalSecure platform, and the vendor has made some tweaks to speed up its scanning capabilities, according to Gordineer.

"Our technology doesn't require us to buffer files into memory in order to perform on-the-fly realtime scanning, which means we can scan very large files simultaneously," said Gordineer.

SonicWall's TZ 190 appliance, introduced last October, adds support for EV-DO wireless broadband connections. Both the TZ 180 and TZ 190 are available with support for 802.11i WLAN.

By packaging the hardware and services into a single SKU, the TotalSecure offerings are ideal for small businesses, said Gordineer. "Combining all the SKUs makes it easy to order and easy for partners to invoice the solution," he said.

The TotalSecure package with TZ 180 appliance and UTM starts at $605 for up to 10 users and $750 for up to 25 users. 802.11i wireless support for each package is available for $700 and $845 respectively.

The renewal price for all of the TotalSecure TZ 180 bundles starts at $210 for a one year subscription.

A TotalSecure package with the TZ 190 appliance is priced at $1,320 and will be available at the end of the quarter.
