Bell Micro Net Income Jumps 159%

The San Jose, Calif.-based distributor earned $4.4 million or 15 cents per share, on $805 million in sales. The results compared to net income of $1.7 million, or 6 cents per share, on $660 million in revenue for the year-ago period.

"The first quarter ended on a strong note as March 2005 was the best sales month in the history of the company," Don Bell, president and CEO of Bell Microproducts said in a statement. "Although there were signs during the first quarter that market conditions have become more challenging in certain product segments and geographies, our efforts are focused on maintaining and improving our profitability and operating margins."

North America sales increased 27 percent compared with the first quarter last year and accounted for 42 percent of sales. European sales increased 21 percent and accounted for 46 percent of revenue. Latin America accounted for 21 percent of sales and increased 7 percent compared to last year.

Shares of Bell Microproducts closed at $7.50 Wednesday, down 23 cents or 3 percent per share.
