Toshiba Lets Your Fingers Do The Working

The two new notebook computers - the "ultra-portable" Portege R200 and the mini-notebook libretto U100 - feature AuthenTec's EntrePad 2501 swipe sensor.

According to AuthenTec, the fingerprint sensor provides consumer as well as corporate users with a reliable method to protect personal information. A swipe of a finger can eliminate the need to remember multiple passwords needed to access favorite websites, corporate networks, e-mail systems and online bank accounts.

In addition to security, sensor users will be able to scroll and rapidly access applications. The technology reads fingerprints below the surface of the skin to the live layer -- or true fingerprint. Therefore, TruePrint is not affected by common skin surface conditions, including dry, worn, calloused, dirty or oily skin that can affect other sensors' ability to acquire accurate fingerprint images for user authentication purposes.

The Portege R200 and libretto U100 are now available through traditional Toshiba sales channels -- which include dealers, VARs and distributors -- and through ToshibaDirect (www.toshibadirect.com). Suggested retail price for the featured configuration of the libretto U100 mini-notebook is $1,999. The Portege R200 is available for $2,099. Reseller prices may vary.
