Symantec Launches First Security, Backup Bundle

The bundles -- which combine either Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Security with Veritas Backup Exec for Windows or Veritas Backup Exec for Windows Small Business Server -- offer a “moderate” discount off the combined MSRP, said Julie Parrish, vice president of enterprise, midmarket and channel marketing for Symantec.

The bundling represents the first step in integrating Symantec and Veritas -- and their product lines -- Parrish said. Later, the company will introduce integrated product combinations and finally brand new products that leverage the security strengths of Symantec and the backup and availability strengths of Veritas, she said.

The new bundling also helps Symantec partners, Parrish said. “It makes it easier for our partners to buy and helps them talk to customers as to why you need to talk about security and availability together,” she said.

With recent worm attacks, that conversation is happening more frequently, said David Sockol, president and CEO of Emagined Security, San Carlos, Calif. “The ability to link security with availability is becoming very hot,” Sockol said. “These bundles for laptops, servers and workstations are getting a lot of interest.”

As Symantec released its bundle for the low end of the market, the company also upgraded its enterprise security line with the launch of the Symantec Gateway Security (SGS) 5600 Series.

The new hardware platform for Symantec&s gateway security delivers improved speed and performance, said Michele Araujo, senior product manager. The performance boost allows Symantec to add its SSL VPN software to existing firewall, IPsec VPN, antivirus and intrusion prevention software, Araujo said.

Adding SSL VPN to the existing features of the SGS makes it a much more compelling offering, Sockol added. “Before we would have had to bring a separate box in to demo SSL VPN,” he said. “Now we can just turn the feature on in the same box. From a VAR perspective, it&s really competitive when we can turn on a feature on a box and let the customer try it out.”
