HP Brings New Servers, Services To Bear On Backup

HP unveiled two new storage servers, the ProLiant DL 100 G2 and HP ProLiant DL 380 G4, which it said would reduce complexity with "one-click" data protection and network-attached storage that is built around Microsoft Data Protection Manager and Windows Storage Server 2003.

The servers provide near-continuous data protection for Windows file servers, along with simple end-user file recovery, and can be configured for small, mid-sized and enterprise level businesses. The DL100 G2 server starts at $5,499 for a 1-terabyte model ranging up to $20,499 for a 6-Tbyte unit. The DL380 G4 is priced at $54,999 for a 9-Tbyte model. Both server types are available Sept. 26, HP said.

The vendor also added the StorageWorks 6840 Virtual Library System (VLS) to its portfolio, which it said accelerates backup and recovery of slow servers in storage area networks environments and integrates with existing backup applications and processes. The 6840 VLS also includes new electronic vaulting services for secure, off-site data protection and retention, multiple backup file versions, and the ability to consolidate remote locations to a single data repository.

The 6840 VLS is priced at $115,000 and is available at the end of the month.

HP also introduced the StorageWorks File Migration Agent (FMA), which it said will reduce online storage requirements with archiving and a multi-tiered framework necessary for information lifecycle management (ILM). FMA lets customers create policies for maintaining active files on high-performance storage and migrate inactive files to cheaper media like tape and NAS. FMA pricing starts at $4,800 per managed server.
