Microsoft finally scrapped the Whistler code name Monday and unveiled the official name of its forthcoming Windows 2000 server upgrade: Windows 2002.
While acknowledging today that the server upgrade won't ship until 2002, company officials adamantly denied industry reports that its client sibling, Windows XP, would be delayed until next year.
The server's naming today comes several months after Microsoft revealed the name for Windows XP, which is also currently in round two of beta testing.
Windows 2002 is expected come in standard, advanced and data center editions and to feature support for Intel's 64-bit Itanium architecture, as well as a series of enhancements to Active Directory, sources say.
Sales of Microsoft's current Windows 2000 Professional desktop client picked up during the last quarter. Windows 2000 Server sales, however, have disappointed Wall Street and channel partners, having jumped a meager five percent last quarter.
