MiLAN Adds Switch Value Line

The Procera line is the hardware vendor's first foray into high-end switching products, said John O'Shaughnessy, director of marketing at MiLAN, known for its media converters and printer servers.

MiLAN this week also plans to roll out its first solution provider partner program, O'Shaughnessy said. While other MiLAN products are available through distributors, the Procera line will be available only to authorized partners direct from the company, he added.

The first of the new switches, the Procera MLS, is a managed 24-port 10/100 switch with two optional slots for Gigabit Ethernet, O'Shaughnessy said. A modular Gigabit version of the switch, dubbed the Procera Flexiport, is slated to be available in about nine months, he added.

With a list price of $8,995, the Procera MLS will save money for budget-conscious clients, said Julia Arnold, vice president at XtraClear Networks, a Fremont, Calif.-based solution provider. XtraClear's government and education clients will be especially interested, she said.

"It's the only switch I know of that incorporates routing, filtering and metering, all at the hardware level at wire speed," Arnold said. "Schools have only so much money, and they're looking for as many features as they can get with that money."

Arnold added that the flow-metering function allows her to tailor the packet prioritization to specific customers' needs or for vertical markets. "That helps me enhance my competitive advantage," she said.
