HP-Compaq Key Channel Positions Still Vacant

Hewlett-Packard Compaq Computer

Among the most prominent appointments were Jim Milton, Compaq's senior vice president and general manager, North America, who was named general manger, Americas, of the Enterprise Systems Group, reporting to Peter Blackmore, who will be become executive vice president, HP Enterprise Systems Group.

The complete list of managers appears at the end of this article.

In addition, Jim McDonnell, currently HP's vice president of marketing for HP's Business Customer Organization, will head up marketing in the new HP Personal Systems Group, reporting to Duane Zitzner, group executive vice president.

Sources said late last week, however, that the integration planning team is still undecided about who will have channel responsibility for HP's volume products, including PCs and imaging, and who will run the value business, including enterprise systems and storage. The two likely candidates for those posts are Dan Vertrees, Compaq's vice president, North America partner sales and marketing, and Kevin Gilroy, HP's vice president and general manager, North America commercial channels.

"I'm encouraged and enthused that they are starting to come out with management appointments," said Don McDowell, vice president of server solutions at Forsythe Solutions, a Skokie, Ill., solution provider. "That means they will be prepared to hit the ground running in a businesslike fashion once the merger goes through."

Another solution provider executive, who asked not to be identified, said the only appointment that surprised him was that of Adrian Koch, who will be responsible for Asia-Pacific and Japan within the HP Personal Systems Group.

"Adrian had appeared to be a little higher up in the organization," he said. "He engineered and controlled much of the four customer-facing organizations at HP."

John Sheaffer, president and CEO of Sysix Technologies, a large HP enterprise solution provider in Westmont, Ill., said, "I don't recognize the people on the enterprise side, and I'm concerned there's not more HP content on that side. It seems like there's more HP management on the PC side and more Compaq management on the high-end side. I would have thought it should have been the other way around," he said.
