Hard Facts: June 3, 2002

The April channel satisfaction index stood at 24.5 percent, down from 24.9 percent in March and below the recent high of 26.9 percent in December. A higher figure indicates a greater level of satisfaction with channel programs, with 100 percent representing the highest possible level of satisfaction.

>> As a group, software vendors' satisfaction index reading of 24.5 percent is still more than 4 percentage points below the figure for hardware vendors.

IBM was the big story among software vendors, with the company's index figure soaring to 47 percent in April from 26 percent in March. The increase was enough to move IBM past Microsoft into the top spot for channel satisfaction.

Microsoft managed a small gain in solution provider satisfaction in April, as did Computer Associates International and BEA Systems.

In contrast, Red Hat, Check Point Software Technologies, Vignette, Veritas Software and VeriSign saw their satisfaction levels decline.

Oracle and Novell, meanwhile, remained unchanged.

The drop in the overall satisfaction level in April would have been much larger without IBM's big gain.
