Microsoft Launches Embedded Developer Program; Updates Road Maps

Microsoft

At the Embedded Systems Conference, held here, Microsoft introduced Services for Embedded Partners, its first support program aimed specifically at embedded developers, those building devices and applications for PDAs, Smart Phones and other embedded devices.

"Microsoft has looked at [embedded developers' specific needs, and this program has been designed specifically for them," said Megan Kidd, product manager for the Microsoft Embedded and Appliance Platforms Group.

Microsoft's new program provides specific points of contacts for developers and support engineers "who lives and breathe" embedded systems, Kidd said. The program also will provide consulting and services and seven years of quick-fix engineering support for device manufacturers.

Additional resources include a new Web site that will house information about certified processors, board support packages and device drivers, and a device emulator package that allows Microsoft's embedded partners to evaluate applications and services written for Windows CE-based platforms without additional hardware.

Kidd added that Microsoft expects to release its first Windows XP Embedded service pack but provided no details about improved features. During the same time, Microsoft will release a Windows .Net Server Appliance kit that will support OEMs developing specific .Net sever devices, such as Web servers or networked storage devices, Kidd said.

Also in the second half of the year, Microsoft expects to ship a minor upgrade to Windows CE .Net, which will provide additional protocols and some document viewers and upgrade Visual Studio.
